‘Redcon’: Build a powerful upgradeable fortress in this new strategy release
Filed inside: GamesTake out all of the senseless violence and terrorist attacks, and the world lives in a relative state of peace. Most countries are behaving, from a military standpoint. It’s hard to imagine what the world would be like had the first World War failed to reach a resolution. Would we live in a barren wasteland riddled with bullets and bloodshed? Would the globe be ruled by a tyrannical leader? This is the scenario proposed by Redcon, an indie strategy release from developer Hexage.
Redcon, taking place in a dystopian future in which the first World War never ended, will have you take to the front lines as a strike commander, under orders from the Fuhrer of the Empire State. Your job is to hunt down and eliminate traitor General Kranz, in an attempt to bring an end to all of the senseless fighting. The citizens of this world have not had a moment’s peace, and are forced to live during intense military struggles. The state of the current world consists of wastelands, filled with troops, vehicles, weaponry, and massive fortresses. You’ll gain access to one of these mighty upgradeable defensive structures, and it’s up to you to use all the tools at your disposal to eliminate any threats to the mission.
Your opposition possesses a similar structure, and will constantly make improvements to their fortress as the battle advances. You’ll need to keep your wits about you, employing strategies to counteract any weaponry you might see on the horizon. By crafting guns and placing heavy artillery on your fortress, you can both attack and defend against your enemies. It’s important to note that strategy isn’t as straightforward as simply attacking and defending. You’ll also need to keep and eye on the health of your base. Fires may break out in certain areas and it will be up to you to put them out, all while maintaining a strong foothold against the enemy. This adds a layer of multitasking to the already-hectic gameplay. Thankfully, you’ll have a special skill at your disposal, to make things a little more bearable. Active Pause gives you the opportunity to freeze time and issue multiple commands to different units. This gives you a chance to work out a given strategy and allocate resources to ensure upkeep of your fortress. Properly managing all of your active repair protocols, defenses, and offensive weapons is the key to surviving an attack and overthrowing the enemy.
Each victory will gain you access to rewards which you can implement during the next struggle. You’ll unlock entirely new fortress layouts, as well as medals perks which will provide you with special bonuses. By gaining cash during battle, you can upgrade your weapons systems and defensive structures. These can be placed in a variety of slots all across your fortress, giving you strategic advantage on how to build your base. Weapons come in a variety of forms. Anti-aircraft cannons will keep the skies clear, while heavy cannons do direct long-rang damage to the opposing base. There are even lasers and biochemical weapons to keep your enemies on their toes.
Redcon is a single-player-only experience, and it can be a little difficult sometimes to gain a quick advantage over the intelligent A.I. Sometimes you’ll find yourself fairly overrun, but once you gain a grip on all of the weapon and defense systems you’ll find yourself gaining ground. Those of you that crave strategy releases will find a very enjoyable experience within Redcon. It offers solid gameplay, wonderful artistry, and polished audibles. It’s easily worth the low price tag, but it’s important to note that the difficulty and heavily-strategic overtones won’t appeal to everyone.
